Railway bridge over the River Ness at Inverness
This railway bridge carries the Far North Line across the River Ness. This bridge dates from around 1990. It was built as the original railway bridge had been partly washed away by floods in 1989, breaking the railway connection to and from the far north of Scotland.

Railway bridge over River Ness
The original railway bridge of 1862 collapsed during flooding in February 1989. This cut off the railway lines in the northern part of Scotland from Inverness. The present replacement bridge is made of steel and was prefabricated. It had to be put up urgently to restore rail services.

Ness railway viaduct, Inverness Harbour
Taken from Anderson Street on the west side of the river, this is the new bridge provided in the early 1990s when the previous bridge collapsed in spectacular fashion, its piers having been undermined by scouring of the river bed during periods of flood. A number of trains were stranded on the suddenly isolated Far North and Kyle of Lochalsh lines. Note the line of turbulence close to the bridge as the incoming tide meets the outflow from Loch Ness coming down the river.
