Head Gardener's House
'The Buildings of Scotland' says that the head gardener's cottage has a bolection-moulded doorpiece with neo-Jacobean obelisks and console brackets flanking monograms. The initials are those of Sir William Gordon Gordon-Cumming (1848-1930) and his wife Florence Josephine Garner (1867-1922), an American cotton heiress.

At least it makes a change from the snow...
These dogs are confused. There's normally snow on the ground and the sound of guns when they visit but today, nothing!

Butterbur a gogo at Altyre
Butterbur (Petasites hybridus) thrives on shady well watered soil as found here on Altyre estate. The flower of this plant precedes the leaves which are the largest leaves of any native British plant. Sometimes these leaves can measure up to one metre across! The name of the plant is derived from the latter days practice of using the leaves to wrap butter. Butterbur roots are widely sought in the field of medicine for the production of a diuretic or muscle relaxing drug. The plant also has its own moth.

Drive over - off for some broth!
That's the morning drives complete and now the guns and beaters are off to their lunch. A large pan of broth is normally supplied but after an hour the sport continues.

Guns deployed by the Beeches
The guns await the first flush of birds from the Beech wood. Notice the safety steps taken by the participants; some guns pointing skyward, some pointing to the ground. I prefer the former stance.
