Shetland Bus memorial and Torfness House
The location is Granary Street, on the Burghead harbour-side. The angled stone in the foreground is a memorial to the men of the Burghead base of the Shetland Bus, and who died in its service. Officially known as the Norwegian Independent Naval Unit, the Shetland Bus was the name given by escaping Norwegians to the Second World War operation which ferried supplies, agents and ammunition to Nazi-occupied Norway and rescued people fleeing from there. The main base for the unit was at Scalloway in Shetland, but there was a subsidiary base at Burghead from late 1941 until summer 1943. The headquarters was at the Salmon Bothy (see Image]). The large building beyond is Torfness House. Torfness House is a former grain store, built about 1810. The building later served as a chandlery, and is now converted into private residential accommodation.

Drums, Battens and Buoyancy Aids
I was so puzzled by these piles of objects on the quayside, one apparently opposite each of the boats moored below, that I just had to find out what they were for. It transpires out that they are nothing to do with the boats, but part of an army raft-building exercise. My informant, in the harbour office, said that this was a regular event, but that normally there would be drums in fours rather than singly. There was no sign of any soldiers, not even using binoculars to see if they were running along the beach from Findhorn. Perhaps they were waiting for the tide to go down to allow them to run along on firm wet sand instead of soft dry sand, which is exhausting work.

Memorial to the Men of the Shetland Bus
Although the work of the Shetland Bus conveying men and ammunition between Shetland and Nazi-occupied Norway during WW2 is well known, this monument marks the fact that several missions of the 'Bus' also ran out of Burghead. The white building in the background now houses a public convenience and is home to the harbour offices, but was once a former granary-warehouse dating from 1881. It is category C listed.

Burghead memorial to "The Shetland Bus"
Although most of the WW2 Shetland Bus operations were based in Scalloway, Shetland, earlier operations were based in Burghead.

Harbourside Buildings
The area immediately south of the harbour has been turned into a grassy area with picnic tables. The white building at extreme right is the harbour office, with the essential facilities in the basement well signposted. The tallest building is a former granary, now converted to flats.

Boats in Burghead Harbour
Lobster boats and pleasure craft in the historic Telford-designed harbour. The large building is one of three former granaries on the quayside, all of which are being developed into (holiday) flats.

'Environmental improvement'
It was a grand scheme - the UK paid the EU tens of billions of pounds of which a small proportion was returned for use on capital projects - projects which were selected by EU bureaucrats. Thank goodness all of this nonsense is coming to an end.
