I was so puzzled by these piles of objects on the quayside, one apparently opposite each of the boats moored below, that I just had to find out what they were for. It transpires out that they are nothing to do with the boats, but part of an army raft-building exercise. My informant, in the harbour office, said that this was a regular event, but that normally there would be drums in fours rather than singly. There was no sign of any soldiers, not even using binoculars to see if they were running along the beach from Findhorn. Perhaps they were waiting for the tide to go down to allow them to run along on firm wet sand instead of soft dry sand, which is exhausting work.
