Elgin High Kirk
In fact there are two of Elgin's rather large supply of churches in this view. On the left is Elgin High Kirk. This is now a Church of Scotland, but was originally a United Free Church, built in 1843 by well-known local architect Thomas Mackenzie. Closing the view at the far end of the street is Image

Elgin Free Kirk
Dating from 1862-1863 (or 1865, depending whom you believe) and designed by Alexander William Bisset, this seems to have been a United Presbyterian kirk. There is a notice on the door saying that services are held on Sundays at 11.00am and 6.00pm but I heard no sounds from inside when I took this photograph at about 6.40pm.

The 'Northern Scot' Offices
The 'Northern Scot' is Elgin's weekly newspaper, published every Friday. Until a few years ago its premises, including printing presses, were in a warren-like collection of buildings in a close off the High Street, but the actual printing is no longer done in Elgin, and the editorial and advertising offices moved into smaller premises.
