Thetford houses [33]
The Old Rectory, number 30 Raymond Street, was built in the early 19th century. Constructed in flint with gault brick dressings and a gault brick front. Listed, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1219142
Once the ancient capital of East Anglia, Thetford is a market town established at a crossing of the River Little Ouse. A major centre of Boudica’s Iceni tribe with an Iron Age fort. Later came a Norman castle and an important priory. Thetford is the birthplace of 18th century radical Thomas Paine, whose thinking encouraged American independence and the abolition of slavery. After World War II, Thetford became an "overspill town", taking people from London.

At the narrowest point of the street, the former brewery (the carpet warehouse) faces the old gaol. Both of flint with gault brick dressings, the Thetford trademark.

Thetford buildings [35]
The Old Gaol, numbers 4 and 6 Old Market Street, was built in 1796 on the site of an earlier gaol and enlarged in 1816. Constructed in flint with gault brick dressings with the south gable wall rebuilt in yellow brick in the 20th century. It functioned as a prison until the 19th century and remained in use as a police station until 1936 when the ground and first floor were converted into two houses. The top floor was converted into flats in the 1980s and many original features have been retained including the barred windows.
