The Old Gaol, numbers 4 and 6 Old Market Street, was built in 1796 on the site of an earlier gaol and enlarged in 1816. Constructed in flint with gault brick dressings with the south gable wall rebuilt in yellow brick in the 20th century. It functioned as a prison until the 19th century and remained in use as a police station until 1936 when the ground and first floor were converted into two houses. The top floor was converted into flats in the 1980s and many original features have been retained including the barred windows. Listed, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1208054
