Moat at South Elmham Bishop's Palace
A view of the moat at this 13th century Bishop's palace (now incorporated in the hall). The moat, which is mostly still in water protects the 4 acre site, it is thought to pre-date the hall.
Built by the Bishops of Norwich who held the South Elmham villages (called the 'Saints') at Domesday in 1086, once part of the ancient Saxon estates. The purpose was mainly to hunt deer.
The hall and farm were acquired from Henry VIII in 1540, by Edward Lord North.
Today the hall can be toured and offers B&B.

South Elmham Hall
The hall, which started life as a Bishop's palace still retains the 13th century first floor. Bishop Herbert de Losinga gifted the palace to the priory of Norwich in 1100. It remained in church hands until the dissolution in 1450 when it was sold to Edwards (later Lord) North. The palace was converted to a hunting lodge, surrounded by the large Deer park well stocked by Herbert de Losinga.
It is now open for tours and as a B&B.

Barns at South Elmham Hall
The grounds of South Elmham Hall http://www.southelmham.co.uk/ are open to the public. In the four acre moated enclosure, which surrounds the Hall, which is thought to pre date the property, is a ruined gatehouse and range of converted farm buildings which incorporate some remnant architecture of the bishops chapel and cloister.
