Cottages in Thorpeness village
These properties are part of the trickery of Thorpeness, which was mostly built in the early 20th century at the whim of the barrister Glencairn Stuart Ogilvie as a holiday destination for friends and family. After the death in 1972 of his grandson, properties in the village had to be sold off by the estate to cover death duties, with the result that many of the houses are now privately owned. That said, they often remain with families and descendants of the original users, so the atmosphere of the place has been well maintained.
