This ford on Stoney Lane runs along the River Deben and is by far the longest ford I have so far discovered measuring a good half mile. The river bed forms the road and is a smooth sandy bottom. At the time of my visit a local man told me the post van routinely used the ford and he used to cross country run down it as a school boy. The River Deben runs for about a mile along this lane (called Stoney Lane or sometimes Derrybrook Lane) to the West of Debenham. It's reputed to be the longest ford in Britain. The river bed is metalled and is maintained by the local council as a road. It ceases being a public road at Bryces Farm and turns into a farm track and permissive footpath which leads to Ulveston Hall. There is a glacial erratic rock in the bed of the river (in the woods to the south just after the river parts company with the lane) known locally as the "Groaning Stone". It is reputed to roll over and groan at midnight - I've been there at midnight and I can confirm that it doesn't!

The River Deben runs for about a mile along a metalled road (a council maintained public road, although there are only three houses served by it) which is normally flooded in the winter and reasonably dry in summer.
