Ipswich St Mary le Tower
Because this building is so enclosed by surrounding buildings, it is impossible to photograph in its full glory. Shame on Ipswich for allowing these lovely churches to be so thoughtlessly surrounded. This beautiful church has been restored and rebuilt over the centuries and the result is this elegant Victorian edifice. The spire rises to 176, feet, and the present church is the result of work carried out between 1830 and 1880 by various architects and builders. Originally the intention was to restore the building, but there were so many ‘encumbrances and disfigurements of the last two centuries’ that the whole lot was demolished and work started afresh. Hardly restoration, but the result speaks for itself.
