As a plaque on the frontage indicates, Charles Dickens stayed at the Great White Horse Hotel, and also had his character Mr Pickwick do so (Ipswich features as the thinly disguised Eatanswill, where Mr Pickwick witnesses a bye-election). To see the plaque go to Image
