Debach village sign
Debach, pronounced deb-itch, is a small village which during WW2 had an American airbase with the 493rd Bomb Group (Heavy) within its bounds. A B17 Flying Fortress is prominently featured on the sign along with a boat being built, which would suggest that at sometime the parish was in the past connected to the sea by the River Deben. lose-up > http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/4618083

Memorial plaque to the 493rd Bomb Group (H) at Debach
The plaque features a B24 Liberator and a B17 Flying Fortress, both of which flew from Debach as part of the 8th United States Army Air Force's strategic bombing campaign of Nazi Germany. The Airfield opened in April 1944 and the last mission, an attack on marshalling yards at Nauen took place on 20 April 1945. Part of one of the runways still exists and there is a museum run by local volunteers.
