Woodford Underground Station
Although ancient - it is mentioned in the Domesday Book - it is probably fair to say that well-heeled Woodford is one of London's more obscure suburbs - although it does have a claim to fame as the town was represented by Winston Churchill in parliament from 1924 until 1964. It is however served by the Central Line which by this point has left the traditional East End well behind. Some historical notes are given by Marathon with this image: Image

Looking north along the Central line of the London Underground towards Loughton and Epping, with a train of 1992 tube stock heading away either towards Epping or towards Hainault. The train has just passed the site of a level crossing by which Snakes Lane formerly crossed the railway.

Woodford Underground station, Greater London
Opened in 1856 by the Eastern Counties Railway, later part of the Great Eastern Railway, on the line from London Liverpool Street to Loughton, this station became part of London Transport in 1947. Forecourt, view south. Like 55% of the London Underground network, this part is actually overground.

Woodford Green Broadway
The growth of Woodford Green started with the arrival of the railway in 1856 (now the Central Line tube). The handsome parade of shops at the Broadway, opposite the station, is now a Conservation area. The small green in front was named Pankhurst Green in 1995 after the writer and campaigner Sylvia Pankhurst (daughter of the suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst) who lived nearby from 1924 to 1956.
