Barkingside Cemetery
Barkingside Cemetery opened in 1923 when the first burial took place. In 1954 when the cemetery had become full an extension was opened on the other side of Longwood Gardens and this became Barkingside Garden of Rest. Barkingside Cemetery is laid out on a simple grid with wide paths and some covered seats. A small hedged plot on the north east side is reserved for former members of Dr Barnardo's Village Home, which had been established in 1875. At that time Barkingside was a small village. This was a freezing January day where early fog had cleared to mist.

Recent burial at Barkingside Cemetery
A short service to bury my second cousin, Ada Mary Baker, had just taken place and I had returned to photograph the grave. Standing behind it are Andrew and Naomi Willets, who were related to her mother’s side of the family. Ada lived for 7 years at Image and before that in Image She lived in Clandon Road for 83 years, at number 37 (which she owned) and at number 41 (which her father rented).

Former Barnardo's home, Barkingside
The Barnardo's home at Barkingside featured cottages (in which girls could live in a family-like environment) around three large greens. On the death of Thomas Barnardo, a memorial statue was erected at the point where the three greens met. Only one of the greens survives now; the cottages on the north side are occupied by Barnardo's administrative staff and those on the south side have been converted to housing for the elderly. At the north-east corner of the surviving green is the children's church, which was paid for by an anonymous donor in memory of her parents and is specifically designed for children (the pews are child-sized and the images in the stained glass are of Bible stories featuring children).

Cottage for tuberculosis sufferers, former Barnardo's home, Barkingside
This particular cottage was designed for children with tuberculosis: in line with the medical theories of the day, it has extra-large windows to increase the amount of fresh air and sunlight reaching the residents.
