Cob Clough, Bank Hey Bottom Lane, Barkisland
Cob Clough is the valley sloping up to the right. As usual around here, there is a strip of woodland in the valley bottom.

Trough, Bank Hey Bottom Lane, Barkisland
This is only a few metres up the lane from a well. Stone setts were provided to avoid a muddy patch in what would have been an unsurfaced lane before the mid-20C.

Milestone, Ripponden New Bank B6113, Barkisland
This road was built as a turnpike road to give an easier gradient (although still quite steep) than that of the old road. The milestone has 'To Elland IIII miles' on one face and 'To Rochdale XI miles' on the other. In each case the inscription has been cut a second time. The older inscription is in upper and lower case with Roman numerals, and the newer in smaller capitals with modern numerals.

Old milestone
This very old milestone is in Ripponden at the bad corner on Elland Road, B6113 just up from the main A road. The first inscription Rochdale/XI Miles can be seen under the later addition on this face. The lane at the top of the picture is Bank Hey Bottom Lane. The stone was repainted in 2017 but hasn't weathered very well. The Rochdale to Halifax to Ealand turnpike dates from 1734 so this may be a turnpike stone. It is Grade II listed 406364.
