Barkisland Mills
Former woollen mills converted to apartments. This elevation is nice but there are horrible balconies overlooking the mill pond.

Barkisland Mills
This fine building, formerly a woollen mill, has been converted to apartments. Sadly, the side facing the mill pond has been spoilt by balconies. I hate balconies on former mills, with a passion. It is always debatable whether to use mill or mills but the definitive guide to Yorkshire mill lists this as Barkisland Mills and a paper by Holden explains that use of the plural was common in Yorkshire.

Barkisland Mills - spoilt!
This elevation of this fine old woollen mill has been ruined by balconies as part of its conversion to accommodation. I love Yorkshire mills and hate balconies on them.

Barkisland Mills
Former woollen mill that was at least part water powered and now converted to apartments. This is by far the best elevation with three stair towers and very few balconies.

Barkisland Mills
Giles and Goodall's Yorkshire Textile Mills lists this as Barkisland Mills while the map labels it as Barkisland Mill. Use of the plural for textile mills was common in Yorkshire and according to Holden reflected the rather piecemeal way that many sites developed. This fine building was at least in part water powered and the mill pond and water courses still survive. This elevation is rather fine and relatively unspoilt but the other side has some abominable excrescences resulting from its conversion to accommodation.

Converted mill - Barkisland Mills
This is from the mill pond side. The stream here flows over a weir and under the mill. The balconies are an addition from the conversion and they don't float my boat. The other side is really quite nice with the stair towers in hotel de ville style (I think). No obvious engine house or chimney remain but it seems a bit big for pure water power.
