This looks like a plantation, but the trees have not been thinned out and so are growing thin and tall, reaching up for sunlight.

Footpath 9/378/3, Northowram
Here the path passes between Butcher's Broom and holly, and a kind person has trimmed both plants to save us being scratched. The Butcher's Broom is taller than it should be, and is spreading by underground rhizomes, producing the mass of shoots in the foreground. No berries, so a male plant - there is a female plant with berries not far away - Image

Butcher's Broom, Ruscus aculeatus, Northowram
Butcher's Broom is plentiful on this hillside. It is a long way north of its natural range, so has probably been established from seeds from berries eaten by birds from a shrub in a garden. It should flower in February to April, but there were no flowers this year by 10th April, perhaps because the weather has been cold. The plant in this image, however, has a good crop of berries from last autumn.
