Of this part of the County Hall complex Pevsner says "On the creation of the East Riding County Council a three-storey building was erected in Cross Street in 1890-1, designed by Smith & Brodrick. It is of red brick with Ancaster stone details in a Flemish Renaissance style with shaped gables, two-storey canted bays with mullion and transom windows, and decorative terracotta panels. Decorated stone entrance with attached columns.".

Beverley, HU17
The front elevation of County Hall, part of The East Riding Council's premises in Cross Street, looking towards Champney Road (the A164). In 1974 the county of Humberside was created and a new district, later known as the East Yorkshire Borough of Beverley, was formed with the loss to the town of its ancient borough status. Winifred Holtby (1895-1936), the novelist and social reformer, based 'South Riding County Hall, Flintham Bridge' on this building in her sixth and final novel.“South Riding”. It was published six months after her death at the age of 37 from kidney disease. Returning to the world of her Yorkshire upbringing, she created a moving portrait of a rural community struggling with the effects of The Depression. Although the South Riding she referred to is a fictional place - since by definition there are only three ‘ridings’, given that the Anglo-Saxon word "thriding" means a third - Holtby's novel was nonetheless based upon this Riding that she knew so well.

Register Square joins to the right. A misty morning that rather softens this most impressive building that I believe may be council offices.
