Circa 1826, John Malam purchased the former garden ground upon which he erected a gas works and carried on the business of manufacturing gas there for about two years. An impressive stone gateway formed the entrance to the gas works. Grade II Listed Building http://list.historicengland.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1310611 The Town Commissioners purchased the gas works from Malam in 1828 for £8,000. The works supplied much of Beverley's gas until the late 1960s when gas from coal was replaced by supplies from the North Sea. The site of the gas works was redeveloped circa 2006 when Mill View Court, a three-storey block of 31 apartments was erected. The archway was incorporated into the development to form the entrance to the car park.
