Street Scene, South Cave
Though probably very much older, the earliest mention of South Cave in literature appears in the 11th century. The origins of the name Cave are unknown, the most likely being the Anglian 'caf' meaning a fast flowing stream.

Market Place, South Cave
Houses on the northern end of the main A1034 through the village. Judging by the archways, at least one of these buildings may once have been a coaching inn on what was presumably an important route northwards towards York.

Stables of Caves
This faded sign, bearing the county crest and a picture of a piebald gypsy cob, looks as if it has been there for many a year. But this is the same cottage as Image (2008), and there was then no sign on the end wall!

Sign for the Fox and Coney, South Cave
The Fox and aspects of hunting are very popular signs and the frequency of Reynard's appearance is only surpassed by the number of his associates, for he appears with hounds, geese, chicken, grape, pheasants and rabbits.
