Entrance to Eastnor Castle
The architecture is Norman Revival in style. Sandstone quarried in the Forest of Dean was transported to Ledbury by canal and finally by mule. Many rooms inside have been restored to their former glory and are open to the public for several months of the year.

Viewed from the A438. Anyone familiar with the BBC TV adaptation of "The Box Of Delights" from the 1980's will recognise the towers used in several scenes including flying cars and boys!

Eastnor Castle, Eastnor
Robert Smirke's Norman Revival "castle" must have enabled its owner, John Somers Cocks, Baron Somers, to indulge his fantasies of being a medieval overlord. It is, however, generally reckoned to be fairly authentic, especially for its date, 1811-24, as Smirke was a serious architect. That said, the ground-floor windows seen here bear the Gothic hallmark of pointed arches! Pevsner gives a very precise cost of £85,923. Grade I listed. The house is seen more dramatically from afar, e.g.: Image] and Image],
