Robert Smirke's Norman Revival "castle" must have enabled its owner, John Somers Cocks, Baron Somers, to indulge his fantasies of being a medieval overlord. It is, however, generally reckoned to be fairly authentic, especially for its date, 1811-24, as Smirke was a serious architect. That said, the ground-floor windows seen here bear the Gothic hallmark of pointed arches! Pevsner gives a very precise cost of £85,923. Grade I listed.
