Inn sign to Mortimer's Cross Inn
The inn sign records a historic battle in English history. The battle in the Wars and the Roses took place between the Yorkist army led by Edward, 4th Duke of York (later Edward IV), and the Lancastrian army led by Jasper Tudor and his father, Owen Tudor, in support of Henry VI. At sunrise a meteorological phenomenon known as parhelion took place, there appeared to be three suns rising. This frightened many, but Edward of York was convinced this sight represented the Holy Trinity and symbolised God being on their side. This resulted in the 'Sun in splendour' becoming the Yorkist emblem and can be seen in Tewkesbury Abbey Image Edward's forces were victorious with Owen Tudor being captured and taken to Hereford where he was executed.
