West Mercia Police Information

West Mercia is the fourth largest geographic police area in England and Wales. The force area is divided into five territorial policing areas, which match the boundaries of our local authorities.

While West Mercia is predominantly rural, it also contains some densely populated urban areas and many market towns. To ensure we strike the right balance between addressing national and local policing priorities, the force focuses its activities on three priority areas:

  • Serving
  • Protecting the public
  • Making the difference

James Ashton (Inspector)

Following experience in business, advertising and teaching James joined West Mercia Police in 2002.

His career has been a mix of frontline operational policing interspersed with project work.

Working as a Patrol PC, Sergeant and Inspector with experience in interview teams and Safer Neighbourhoods Policing gave James the necessary experience to support the formation of the innovative alliance between Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police as a Programme Manager for Local Policing. He also project managed West Mercia's early adoption of Body Worn Video.

James has acquired a breadth of operational experience including a period as Inspector in the Control Room covering both Warwickshire Police and West Mercia Police, with responsibility for dealing with spontaneous firearms incidents as a Tactical Firearm Commander. Subsequently he qualified as a cadre Tactical firearms commander, and deals with pre-planned deployments including warrants and royal visits.

A period of 12 months in the Staff Office, working for Chief Constable David Shaw and CC Anthony Bangham gave James the opportunity to gain a more strategic oversight of policing, including taking responsibility for the operational delivery of the national Use of Force recording work under the NPCC Conflict Management Portfolio.

James spent a period managing the Wyre Forest Safer Neighbourhood Team in North Worcestershire where he gained experience of managing SNTs. However, when the opportunity to support his own local area, by taking responsibility for the Herefordshire Rural Safer Neighbourhoods Team, James was keen to take this on and commenced the role in November 2017.

Priorities

7 Jan 2019

Residents are concerned about the speed of vehicles through the village which is putting pedestrians and other roads users in danger.

Response (1 Mar 2019)

Speed monitoring and enforcement to take place within the villages at different times of the day, not only from the safer neighbourhood team, but working together with the Safer Roads Partnership.

The A4110 is now part of a casualty reduction program from Canon Pyon all the way through to the junction before Leintwardine. This means that over a three year period, the mobile camera vans and motorbikes will be stationed in various locations across this road monitoring the speed of the traffic, enforcing where necessary

The Safer roads speed camera van has been deployed to various locations throughout our patch, especially on the main A4110 at Kingsland, Wigmore and Aymestry. The safer neighbourhood team will continue to monitor the speed within the villages using the hand held speed gun, educating and prosecuting drivers where appropriate.

July 2019. SNT have been out and about with the speed gun in Leintwardine due to concerns raised by local residents. Stickers displaying slow down in our community have been given to residents for use on their wheelie bins. There is also a stock of these stickers at the local library.
