Amersham Old Town: The Market Hall
The Market Hall was built in 1682 and restored in 1911. It dominates the centre of Amersham Old Town at the east end of the High Street. The market was held at ground floor level and guild meetings in the room above. Behind the bricked up arch to the right was the town lock-up, and the old town pump is visible to the right of that arch.

The town lock-up, Old Amersham
To be found in a corner of the Market Hall undercroft, Old Amersham. In days before the County Police Act of 1839 - which brought in local police stations - lock-ups were used as places of short-term imprisonment, typically for holding drunks overnight. The Market Hall dates from 1682, so this corner of the building may have been in use as a lock-up for nearly 160 years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Village_lock-up

Inscribed stone, the Market Hall, Old Amersham
This stone, quite high up on the west-facing wall, records the date of building as 1682. The hall was apparently given to the town by Sir William Drake - but can the device inscribed on the stone be his monogram? The letters W and E are clear enough, and there could be an X - but where is the D? The W seems to incorporate a pair of compasses - so perhaps the inscription commemorates the mason rather than the donor. The brickwork is in neat Flemish bond, with red stretchers and blue, vitrified headers (the bricks laid with their ends showing).
