The River Meadow at the Pile of Stones board-Lido
Situated in Moor Road HP5 1SE, this board has a photo by Matt Writtle and the following

During the mid 19th-century a new era of contemporary European artists were rediscovering
the appeal of the swimming hole. Water and nudity were pushing at the boundaries of rigid
Victorian society and creating space for new ideas, freedoms and creativity. Wordsworth,
Coleridge and De Quincey spent much time bathing in the mountain pools of the Lake District
in search for the 'picturesque' and 'sublime'. In the Waterside area of Chesham, a lagoon fed by
the River Chess caused consternation with local residents, who complained of a bathing
nuisance, as wild swimmers would swim naked. In 1898 the local council agreed to put a
corrugated iron fence between the well-used pool and the houses opposite. One hundred and
twenty-two years later, this is now the manicured Chesham Moor Gym and Swim, complete
with outdoor heated pool and tennis courts.
