Rising Sun Lock, Grand Union Canal
Modern waterside apartments are reflected in no 55 lock which takes its name from the adjacent pub (just out of shot to the left).

River Bulbourne enters Grand Union Canal
At least in principle it does, via the vegetation choked cut parallel to the lock. It seems to carry little or no flow now, although the watercourse is intact through the town and more or less water filled. It once was also the lengthy tail race of Upper Mill. I cannot account for the opening under the path along the bank, it may be just local drainage. It does not seem to be flowing either. There is no trace on old maps of any drainage to this point.

Rising Sun at lock 55
This is the bottom of three locks at Berkhamsted. It is one of those pubs that if you are lock wheeling (going ahead to set the locks for the boat coming down the previous locks in a flight) you can open the paddles, nip in for a quick pint, have the lock ready, get the boat in and have your pint downed by the time the lock is empty. But as your boating colleagues will not thank you for that, the civil thing to do is to get the round in then moor below the lock to enjoy the pint and a lunch more leisurely.
