Fallow Deer near Barley End
As I drove along Stocks Road between Ivinghoe and Aldbury, I saw this quite substantial group of deer in a field. I stopped to take a photo or two, but they were very alert and I spooked them, so they started cantering across the field away from me. As can be seen, the trailing deer (on the right) seem a bit more relaxed and curious than the lead ones on the left. These wild Fallow Deer are part of the large herd that roam in and around the Ashridge Estate on the Herts / Bucks border. The National Trust owns some 2000 ha (5000 acres) of this beautiful wooded spur of the Chilterns, which contains a variety of landscapes with woodland, chalk downland and grassy commons. The field seen here however belongs to a local farm. The Fallow Deer population is so high that the N.T. has to cull some animals in order to conserve other wildlife and hopefully reduce the number of road accidents involving them.
