The Information/Admissions Hut at College Lake in 2009
The hut was on the site of the new visitors centre and was moved to this location during building and was removed when the centre was opened.

The Beech Nuts have gone
This has been a good year for the beech trees at College Lake Image as there has been a good crop of beech mast. The sharply pointed buds for next year's leaves can also be seen. In the background the track leads back to the Visitor Centre. Image

The Iron Birds fly off into the Sunset
College Lake Nature Reserve closes at 5pm for most of the year, and at 4pm between November and February. This means that normally you are not able to see what strange and mysterious things happen in the witching hours after the sun goes down. Burdock at College Lake Nature Reserve, near Tring
Commonly known as lesser burdock, burweed, louse-bur, common burdock, button-bur, cuckoo-button, or wild rhubarb. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctium_minus This was growing at the edge of the path to the Barns and when the seed heads are ripe they will firmly attach themselves to any hairy object, so don't brush against them. Dogs are very prone to get the burrs badly tangled in their fur.

The Woodland Theatre at College Lake
In the woodland there are a number of open air "classrooms" where small groups of children can sit on seats and listen to a teacher. This is the biggest, and one of the earliest, such areas. It is under two large beech trees Image The wooden badger is one of a pair, and there are other carved animals which are moved around the woodland area.

Stag Horn Fungus at College Lake
This tiny stag horn fungus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xylaria_hypoxylon (see moss for scale) was growing on rotten wood in an area with many elder trees not far from the barn.
