Stoke Mandeville Village Sign
This is on a small green in the centre of the village. The bottom left picture shows an archer in a wheelchair. On 29 July 1948, the day of the Opening Ceremony of the London 1948 Olympic Games a doctor at Stoke Mandeville Hospital organised the first competition for wheelchair athletes which was named the Stoke Mandeville Games. They involved 16 injured servicemen and women who took part in archery. This is now held to be the origin of the modern Paralympic Games.
