Ammonites at Dinton Castle
One of the more remarkable features of the C18th folly of Dinton Castle is the inclusion in the masonry of numerous very large ammonites. In this photograph a particularly large (over a foot diameter) specimen is to the left near the brickwork, while there are (at least) three more smaller ones in a vertical row to the right. These ammonites are dotted about all over the structure as rather bizarre ornamentation. Dinton Castle is EH Grade II* listed http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1118308&searchtype=mapsearch

Dinton Castle ruins - from the inside
A view from inside the ruined folly of Dinton Castle. This is quite a romantic looking ruin and hopefully will be preserved. Scaffolding has been erected to hold some of the window arches which were particularly in danger of collapse. The building is EH Grade II* listed http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1118308&searchtype=mapsearch Note: [2018] Passing this structure a few weeks ago it seems to have undergone the most dramatic transformation. A little research on the web reveals that it was sold for £56,000 at auction to a "businessman who plans to use it as weekend hideaway", and in January 2017 planning permission was granted by Aylesbury Vale District Council for the castle to be renovated into a two-bedroomed dwelling. This renovation now appears to be nearing completion ... I wonder if it'll turn up on "Grand Designs" or "Restoration man" on TV Link to news article: https://www.thametoday.co.uk/news/cheap-for-a-castle-dinton-folly-is-snapped-up-for-56-000-at-auction-by-businessman-who-plans-to-use-it-as-weekend-hideaway-1-4525364 [Edit Oct.2018] More information about its transformation https://www.dintoncastle.co.uk ... and it did indeed appear on Grand Designs https://www.channel4.com/programmes/grand-designs/on-demand/65182-001

Dinton Castle
This folly, known as Dinton Castle, was built in 1769. Sadly it is in a parlous state, but at least some scaffolding has been erected to prevent its imminent collapse. It is EH Grade II* listed http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1118308&searchtype=mapsearch

Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta)
This Red Admiral butterfly was basking on the letter "C" of a sign outside the ruins of Dinton Castle. The sign was for the firm that had erected the scaffolding on the castle (see other photos). While this specimen stayed put for several minutes, its twin was restlessly fluttering around and alighting for only seconds at a time - I wonder why one was sedate and the other fidgety !
