Ripon Town Hall - motto
The city's motto is "Except the Lord keep the cittie, the wakeman waketh in vain". From Psalm 127 verse 1, but here a reference to the historic practice of the night watchman or wakeman, who still proclaims the curfew every evening Image See Image for context.
