Station House, Hampsthwaite
A railway line between Harrogate and Pateley Bridge was opened in 1862 and carried both passengers and freight. Hampsthwaite Station opened in 1866 but was the first of the branch line stations to close in 1950.

Opened in 1866 by the North Eastern Railway on its line from Harrogate to Pateley Bridge, this station closed to passengers in 1950. View north east from near the bridge over the River Nidd.

Old routeway at Clint
This was a well used route in medieval times, and in John Ogilby's map of 1665 is shown as part of the main 'road' from York to Lancaster. Now it is a quiet bridleway.

Clint, Clint Bank
According to the OS benchmark database there is a gatepost with a benchmark cut into a face at this location. The roadside faces of both gateposts were studied and no benchmark found. It is likely that new gateposts have been sunk more recently.

Bridleway at Clint
Now a public bridleway between hedges leading from the road near Hampsthwaite Bridge towards Ripley, but once part of the medieval main road from York to Lancaster. The road followed much of the course of the modern A59 between York and Knaresborough, which was an important town, unlike neighbouring Harrogate which hardly existed, but from Knaresborough the route led directly to Ripley and then along what is now Hollybank Lane to this point. The ancient bridge [shown as 'Hamsworth Bridg' on John Ogilby's map of 1675, and just below the hamlet of 'Clynte'] made a second crossing of the Nidd possible, before the road headed towards Blubberhouses and Skipton.
