Stray Road, HARROGATE, HG2 8AR

Norwood College stood on the corner of Tewit Well Ave and Leeds Rd, Harrogate. It was established as a Boy's Day and Boarding School by 'Charlie' G W G Cass in 1936 and closed on 24 March, 1972. This photograph was taken because I just happened to be visiting Harrogate and had no prior knowledge of the school's closure nor intention to demolish it! The photograph is taken from Tewit Well Ave; the flats on the left hand side are those of Royal Crescent in Leeds Rd. The car, mine, was a Triumph 1500. Charlie Cass was born in Scarborough in 1898, flew as a fight pilot in Sopwith Dolphins in the First World War and the world-renowned physicist, Lawrence Bragg, was one of his tutors at the Victoria University of Manchester in the mid-1920s. Looking down Stray Road. The nearest building is Middleton Lodge, beyond it are Clifton Flats, followed by Tewit Croft. On the left is Tewit Well Stray.

Since this photo was taken nearly 40 years ago, the structure has been smartened up and cleaned with stonework between the columns removed. The 1970 building may be more like the original, as a Victorian photograph of the well shows a walled building with windows and a doorway.
