Old milestone
Looking towards Huddersfield the 16cm deep backing stone is seen. When set up the West Riding milestones were to be painted blue with white lettering. The stone would be left bare as it was good quality from Kirkstall quarry or of a similar standard from elsewhere. It is not known when these milestones began to be painted white with black lettering. And sometimes the stone was painted like this one, or left bare.

Old milestone
This is one of the rarer, flat West Riding CC milestones that were set up in 1893/94. It is on the A616, New Mill Road, Brockholes opposite Brockholes Lane and with its back to the wall of an industrial building. On these West Riding milestone places such as Huddersfield with more than 10 letters had to have the name cast at an angle. The makers name, Brayshaw & Booth, Liversedge is cast above Huddersfield. It is Grade II listed 1134831.

Remains of Smithy Place Mills, Brockholes
The remains of Smithy Place Mills, now a housing estate. There was a loose boiler on site in the open air. This had belonged to James Robinson, dyers and finishers and a visit in the 1980s revealed a ruined beam engine house and a building containing a Belliss and morcom steam engine driving an alternator. This had been installed 3rd hand and was standby between 1973 and 1984. See -
