Founded in 1845 as Upper Slaithwaite Church Mission School. This is locally known as "Shred" which was the name given to the small piece of waste land donated by the Earl of Dartmouth for its construction.

Upper Slaithwaite Church, Bradshaw, Slaithwaite
From a distance this looked like a chapel converted to a house, but the sign says it is still a church, with the curious name of Shred. On the 1850 map this is the Upper Slaithwaite National School

Unofficial road sign, Tyas Lane, Slaithwaite
Any motorist getting this far has ignored the no through road sign at the junction with Bradshaw Lane. I have been informed by a local resident that despite these signs motorists still persist in driving down and getting stuck at the bottom!

Road junction on Bradshaw Lane, Slaithwaite
There are a surprisingly large number of houses, many recently renovated, high up on the hillside at around 300m AOD. Electricity comes by overhead cable. The lane on the left is Laund Road, and on the right Intake Road drops down to Wilberlee. The radio masts in the background are on Moorside Edge.
