Old guidestone
This plaque on the railings surrounding the stoop explains about is origins. GUIDEPOSTS (STOOPS). Since travellers often lost their way in bad weather, in 1697 the Justices were ordered to erect guideposts (stoops) on moorland tracks and where highways crossed. This stoop dates from 1738 and is a Grade II* listed monument. The distances given are in 'long' or 'customary' miles. Refurbished 2007 Kirklees Council, Kirkburton Parish Council and the Milestone Society.

Old guidestone
On a high verge at Farnley Moor End is this Grade II* listed guidestone or stoop dated 1738. It has legends on all four sides and an explanatory plaque on the railings.

Guide post [or stoop], Farnley Moor End
Since travellers often lost their way in bad weather, in 1697 the Justices were ordered to erect guide posts [stoops] on moorland tracks or at crossroads. This one dates from 1738 and is a Grade 2* listed structure. It uses 'long' miles - the front face is carved 'Huddersfield 3 miels.

Old guidestone
This shows the north and west faces. Holmfirth/2 Miles/ hand to right. Pennyftone/6 Miles/hand to right/Honley 2/M hand to left. It is thought that Honley was added later as it is a different style of lettering and the hand and M are etched into the horizontal banding.
