Branch Road, Elland
One of the World's first grade separated road junctions was at Ainley Top. It is shown on the 1850 OS map: The new Halifax to Huddersfield turnpike road (date?) crosses under the New Hey Road of c.1824. The two were connected by Branch Road, which is part of the old Halifax to Huddersfield Road of c.1777. This was closed off when the M62 was built, and leads only to Hill Top Avenue. A cat can safely snooze in the sun until the commuters come home.

Ainley Top, Huddersfield
This square is largely occupied by Junction 24 of the M62. Here the A629passes through a short curved tunnel to descend the Ainleys towards Elland whilst the East West traffic of the M62 thunders overhead.

M62 bridge, Ainley Top
Looking N. The road bends to the right which gives the illusion of there being no road at all on the other side! Elland is in the valley beyond.

Marling Road, Fixby
This junction with New Hey Road was perhaps blocked off before the latter became a minor road, as the blockage hardly seems necessary now. Marling Road is also blocked at the other end, and access is via Branch Lane. Provision has been made for cyclists to ride through the road closure.

New Hey Road, Fixby
Taken from the cross-roads with Grimescar Road. New Hey Road used to be the A643, but is now bypassed and quiet. However the Nag's Head carvery (in the distance) does a brisk trade, and there is a motel behind it.
