One end of the Central Line, West Ruislip
The London Underground's Central Line heads north out of west London, its main branch ending here at West Ruislip. The third rail just stops. A journey here from Crystal Palace via Overground and Jubilee Line – about 50 km by rail – took about two hours. Through the arches can be glimpsed the HS2 works, where the high-speed line will emerge from the Northolt Tunnel and head for Birmingham.

West Ruislip station, Ickenham Road
The reason for the two logos above the entrance – London Underground and National Rail – is that there are two stations accessible from the one building: the Central Line of the Underground (its western terminus) and a local station on the Chiltern line between Marylebone, High Wycombe, Princes Risborough and Oxford. There are a couple of shops on each side of the station with some on-street parking by this very busy road. Photo number 7506511.

West Ruislip station
West Ruislip is one of two western termini of the Central Line and is served by Chiltern Railways trains to London (Marylebone) and High Wycombe also. Situated on the last main line to be built in the London area until the coming of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, West Ruislip was opened in April 1906 by the Great Western & Great Central Joint Railway. It was reached by tube trains in November 1948 when the Central Line was extended westwards beyond North Acton.

This is the rear of the main, Central line entrance to the station situated on Ickenham Road. Dating from the 1960s it today looks the worse for wear.
