Sheet Parish Church: early May 2019
The foundation stone for St Mary Magdalene was laid in 1867 on a plot donated by John Bonham-Carter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Bonham-Carter_(1817%E2%80%931884) MP for Winchester from 1847 to 1884. It was consecrated by John Maunoir Sumner http://www.thepeerage.com/p57128.htm#i571274 the Rector of Buriton on 10 September 1868. It was part of Buriton Parish from then until 1886; and of Petersfield until 1990, when it became a parish in its own right http://www.sheet.church/whoswho/

Memorial to a village priest
Sampson was born on 8 February 1857 in Uttoxeter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uttoxeter and graduated from Clare College Cambridge in 1880 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clare_College,_Cambridge In that year he was ordained Deacon, and in 1882. He served his title at St Mary, Saffron Walden https://www.stmaryssaffronwalden.org/ before coming to Buriton https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6134501 in 1883. After his time in Sheet he was Vicar of Ramsdell https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramsdell and Rural Dean of Silchester until his death on 7 November 1927 https://archive.org/details/p2alumnicantabri05univuoft/page/408

A new name on the incumbency board
A decade since my last visit Sheet are now on their fourth vicar. That may not seem many for a church that is 151 years old but until 1990 it was a daughter church of St Peter, Petersfield.
