The sign reflects the fact that the pub is adjacent to the Wey Navigation.

The New Inn, Send Road
A popular canalside pub adjacent to the Wey Navigation. A great many years ago the pub used to double as a temporary mortuary for the nearby Brookwood Cemetery. Occasionally funerals would be held in the pub itself, with the body laid out in the middle of the pub. Drinks taken at the time were known as "stiff drinks" and maybe this is the origin of that expression. Fortunately there is absolutely no risk of stumbling across a dead body when visiting the pub these days.

The New Inn stand by the Wey Navigation and Carters Bridge on the outskirts of Send, initially serving the navigation traffic and now the traveller, one of the out buildings was at one time the local mortuary.

The New Inn
This pub at Send sits beside the River Wey Navigation at Cartbridge. The pub sign would make you believe that this pub was formerly used by bargees in previous years. Today it provides a welcome halt for pleasure craft, walkers and local folk.
