Poulton Priory
Ornate gate and driveway appears largely for decorative purposes as access to the buildings is via a more usable drive at right angles to left of this shot. See Image

Poulton Priory, Poulton
The Priory is well-hidden from most viewpoints. This is about the only one in a public place where the main building can be seen. The property does not appear to be listed and there are no listed building applications in respect of it in the local council's planning files so maybe it is a fairly recent development.

The Lodge to Poulton Priory
The Lodge and gates at the entrance to Poulton Priory. Pevsner describes Poulton Priory as 'a large stone Tudor-Renaissance house of 1895-97 for James Joicey by Charles J. Blomfield (Sir Arthur Blomfield & Son)', though the house doesn't appear to be listed. In medieval times the Gilbertine Priory founded in 1350 by Thomas de Sancto Mauro (or Seymour) stood nearby.

Poulton Priory
Also called the Priory of St. Mary, Poulton Priory was a small priory of probably not more than 4 or 5 Gilbertine canons founded originally as a chantry chapel in 1348 by Sir Thomas Seymour, but changed to a house of Gilbertine canons from 1350. It was dissolved in 1539. The former conventual church became the parish church, but this was demolished and replaced by another church, built in 1873. The only extant remains are a 14th century arch incorporated in a wall at Priory Farm (presumably this building). The site was assessed for Scheduling in 2011 but failed to meet the required criteria. http://pastscape.org.uk/hob.aspx?hob_id=327300 This former farmhouse is now a nine-bedroom private house situated in a 159 acre estate.
