Water turbine, Longfords Mill
Impressive disused water turbine that drove an alternator. The green box closest is the exciter, then a bearing, alternator and disc flywheel. The turbine is behind the flywheel. The inlet is the almost horizontal green pipe back right. The complex looking widget back left is the governor for the turbine.

Longfords Mills, Minchinhampton
The mills were disused now but it was to be ten years before redevelopment really got under way. There was a powerhouse here with a steam engine, two diesels and a water turbine. This was the last trip I made with late George Cooper.

Longfords Mill - Milling machines
These were used to process woollen cloth and were the modern replacement for fulling stocks. The cloth was stitched into a long loop and passed repeatedly between wooden rollers under high pressure. The milling machine was invented by John Dyer of Trowbridge in 1833. English Heritage's photographers recorded this site and there is a published monochrome picture that is very similar to this.
