Ebley Mill
Now the headquarters of Stroud District Council, this magnificent cloth mill stands beside the Stroudwater Navigation which is steadily being brought back to life. The tower with the steeply pitched roof is a flourish added by G.F. Bodley, who designed nearby All Saints, Selsley for the Marlings of Stanley Park, owners of the mill.

Ebley Mills - weir
This is round the back of this former woollen mill complex and shows a weir on the River Frome. The mills used both water power and, later, steam power. I was hoping for a better angle round here but this was the furthest I could get. The mill is now used as council offices.

Ebley Mills
A Grade II* Listed former woollen mill that is now council offices and looks quite magnificent. This is one of many reused mills in the Stroud area but arguably one of the finest.

Ebley Mills
A Grade II* Listed former woollen mills complex. This part is now council offices and looks magnificent. The two thirds of the picture to the right is the block built in 1818 with four storey and 18 x 3 bays. There are domestic style chimneys that would have been associated with heating and not steam power. This block was water powered. Beyond is 1862 block of 5 storey and 6 x 6 bays. This includes a projecting clock and stair tower described as having a French Gothic roof (also termed hotel de ville style). The 1818 block is typical of the older Stroud mills that are narrow and of an up-scaled domestic style. The 1862 block is wider with larger windows reflecting changes in building technology and the need to accommodate bulkier machinery. The 1862 block also shows evidence of steam power with a chimney, boiler house and beam engine house.

Ebley Mills
The photographer position is no more than an approximation as I can't remember the details. This is a former woollen mill that is now council offices. The long block to the left is earlier and was water powered. The squarer block with larger windows to the right is a later extension and house a steam engine as evidenced by the chimney.
