Road now where the rails were - Stroud, Gloucestershire
Tarmac and wheeled vehicles have now replaced the rails and trains which ran through this area as part of the Stonehouse to Nailsworth Railway. Behind this Geographer on a high wall is a plaque marking the site of Dudbridge Station. Opened in 1867 trains travelled this line at a relatively sedate 17 miles per hour, in sharp contrast to the speeds by present day traffic. Photo taken on the day of a Railway Ramblers walk from Stroud to Nailsworth. Time taken 1.32 pm BST (British Summer Time). Image] Image]

The site of Dudbridge Station, Stroud
There was a railway station on the Midland railway from 1867 until 1969. The platform can still be seen. There is also a plaque commemorating the life of the station visible on the left and seen close up in this image http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/932036

A bench at the site of Dudbridge Station, Stroud
A little haven of tranquility away from the cares of the world? It is certainly quite well hidden from the road otherwise someone else would have photographed it by now but the traffic noise reduces its value as a quiet zone. No matter. It's good to see that the past has been recognized not completely obliterated.
