Cowley Manor Hotel
Italianate mansion from 1855 now a country house hotel. 12th C church to the right 'having some work done on it'. Once the home of James Horlick of hot, milky drink fame. He's supposed to haunt the place at night, so the Horlicks hasn't worked for him then!

Cowley Manor, Cowley
Big and regular Italianate. It is of two builds and the join is evident. The right-hand five bays are by George Somers Clarke, 1855-57, for James Hutchinson, a London stockbroker. Then, in 1896-1902, R.A. Briggs faithfully followed the original when he added the six bays to the left for Sir James Horlick (as in the drink). An Ionic arcade runs along the whole length. Grade II listed.
It is now the Cowley Manor Hotel.

Cowley Manor Hotel
This Grade II listed Italianate villa was built in 1855 and remodelled in about 1900 by Sir James Horlick, the malted-milk magnate. They have certainly not made a horlics of converting it into a classy hotel sitting in 55 acres of its own grounds.

Cowley Manor Hotel - a sideways look
Reputedly this is where Lewis Carroll first met Alice in Wonderland, although they were called Revd Charles Dodgson and Alice Liddell at the time. Alice's uncle was a fellow Revd at Cowley.
