Seen from Keynsham Road is the River Chelt, looking downstream. The source of the river is near Leckhampton and it flows through Cheltenham before its confluence with the River Severn at Wainlodes Hill. Cheltenham is located at the foot of the Cotswold scarp with the small River Chelt flowing through the town. After the discovery of mineral springs in 1716 Cheltenham became a spa town and many Regency houses and other buildings were erected. The town is home to the renowned Cheltenham Festival, four days of horse jump racing culminating in the Gold Cup, held annually in March at the nearby racecourse.

This unusual structure didn't begin life as a folly in Sandford Park, its proper name is The Whish Sister's Fountain. It was commissioned as a gift to Cheltenham from Mary, Anne and Ellen Whish in 1891. The fountain was a gift from the sisters, to commemorate their 50th anniversary in the town. The east end of the park is a large open grass area with a small ornamental garden at the Keynsham Road entrance.

Near the Keynsham Road entrance is the LINC Sanctuary Garden (see Image). In the centre is a small aedicule, The Whish Sisters' Fountain, surrounded by seating. Erected in 1901 the umbrella sheltered a drinking fountain. Originally situated on Westall Green, Lansdown Road, the fountain was moved here in 1929.
