Pittville Gates
The Pittville Gates are the grand entrance to the Pittville Estate which was originally developed by Joseph Pitt. The ornamental arch was added in 1897. The gate have been restored and were formally re-opened on 7 April 2015. Note the coat of arms above the gate with a pigeon, this bird played an important part in the development of Cheltenham, pecking at salt at a mineral well.

Pittville Gates
These ornamental gates, guarding the way into Pittville Lawn and Pittville Park, were erected in 1833 to give a grand entrance to the Pittville Estate. They were designed by Robert Stokes.

Cheltenham features [46]
This fine gateway, at the entrance to the Pittville Estate, was erected in 1833. There are six ashlar pillars and six cast iron gates. The overthrow with the words Pittville Park was added in 1897. The gateway was restored in 2012. There is an information board giving details of the gateway at Image Listed, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1387480 The Pump Room, roads and gardens of the Pittville Estate were purchased by Cheltenham Borough Council in 1891 and opened as a public park. The park is on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1000196 Cheltenham is located at the foot of the Cotswold scarp with the small River Chelt flowing through the town. After the discovery of mineral springs in 1716 Cheltenham became a spa town and many Regency houses and other buildings were erected. The town is home to the renowned Cheltenham Festival, four days of horse jump racing culminating in the Gold Cup, held annually in March at the nearby racecourse.
