Old Milestone near Fretherne church, Fretherne with Saul Parish
Carved stone post by the UC road, in parish of FRETHERNE WITH SAUL (STROUD District), 70m before Fretherne Church path, on narrow verge under power lines, on South side of road. Arlington Passage stone, erected by the Frocester (Division) turnpike trust in the 19th century.

Milestone in Fretherne
Like others in the area, this milestone is a rather plain, rounded and smooth edifice. There is little distinguishing information with perhaps the exception of some weathered chisel marks. In the past it did say 'Gloucester 2, London 112'.

The small village boasts the splendid Victorian church of St Mary - locally referred to as a mini cathedral. Grade II* listed.

Two tall angels
Facing east are two large sculptures on Fretherne's remarkable church. The local landowning Darell family were the major patrons of the new parish church, and presumably the money helped to add the sort of embellishments that are not so common among village churches. Grade II* listed.

Blind angels
A detail of the east end of St Mary's church, Fretherne: two angels shield their eyes. Along with the other fine details of the mid-Victorian church, they are some of the many things to intrigue the visitor. The local lords of the manor, the Darell family, were largely responsible for the funding of the church, which was designed by Francis Niblett and later embellished by J.W. Hugall.
